Mokone-Maruping
Care Giving Project
Mokone-Maruping means going
back to your place of origin. This name was inspired by the fact that
this is an initiative led by senior citizens who are at the epicenter
of the epidemic and are now playing the role of sole guardianship of
their grandchildren and other orphans. Some of the orphans being cared
for by this project have lost their parents to AIDS related illnesses.

Thusanang HIV and AIDS Project
Thusanang was established
in 2001 by a group of concerned people who realized the desperate need
for support groups in which people living with HIV and AIDS could talk
and share experiences of their journey. Instead of sitting and twiddling
their thumbs waiting for something to happen, this group decided to
make things happen by training in flower arrangement and beadwork projects
which have become a source of income for many others independent of
Thusanang. They provide wreaths to comrades who have passed on. The
income generated from such projects is used to buy food parcels for
their clients who are poor and needy, and by so doing, the vision of
this organisation is being realized. They operate in and around Rosettenville.

Pumla
handicapped sheltered workshop
In
February 2002, a team of dynamic volunteers from the Soweto Info Centre
decided to start this project. This was encouraged by a motivation session
on community development, where one of the Pumla student governing body
(SGB) members was present. Driven by the vision that all disabled people
need to be treated with dignity and respect, this group initiated projects
which would expose the talent and ability of the disabled. Today, this
group makes glasses out of recycled cider bottles, Xfurniture, beads,
clothes etc. The generated income helps improve their workshop and also
serves as an incentive to those involved in the project. They operate
from Orlando West in Soweto
