2010 - Community Champions

“RE-IGNITING THE SPIRIT OF DIGNITY AND UBUNTU IN COMMUNITIES”

AIDS Consortium Community Champions are a cadre of community activists advocating for the rights of people like themselves – those living with HIV. Having experienced stigma and discrimination themselves, the Community Champions have identified other social ills that continue to perpetuate this behaviour against and amongst People Living with HIV (PLHIV). The Community Champions were selected by The AIDS Consortium to drive Human Rights advocacy in their communities. The aim of this campaign is therefore:

• To promote the rights of PLHIV
• To provide an opportunity to challenge stigma and discrimination in communities
• To enhance knowledge around how to use the law and justice to challenge stigma on the basis of one’s HIV status

Despite our world class Constitution, the majority of South Africans are still not fully cognisant of their rights as enshrined in the Constitution, which is meant to protect them. Neither are they aware of potential recourse should their rights be violated. HIV is still perceived as an outcome of sexual excess and low moral character; this perception discourages disclosure and is a barrier to accessing life saving services and interventions – This is what the Community Champions Campaign is responding to!
