Invitation for 24 June 2008

Dear colleagues,

This month’s bua@AC (monthly communication forum bringing together over 120 human rights and HIV and AIDS activists) will be focusing on the rights of children, whilst looking closely at the impact HIV and AIDS has on these children in our communities. The event aims to achieve the following objectives:

  1. -          Demonstrate the impact of HIV on Children in communities through personal profiles of children heading households, parents caring for children with HIV and parents who have lost their children to HIV.
  2. -          Highlight services available for children affected and infected by HIV through information stalls and key presentations on the link with the NSP (National Strategic Plan) and social grants and other social services.
  3. -          Commemorating children (100 children from AC affiliate communities – mostly semi-urban and rural) through providing various fun activities for them at the Mary Fitzgerald square

We will have it at Museum Africa, where we normally host our monthly meetings. We anticipate having some activities at the Mary Fitzgerald Square where we will be hosting 100 children. We also anticipate having other activities (information stalls) within the museum itself. We are hoping that you could come on board with assisting with some of the listed items on the letter.

The South African Football Players Union (SAFPU) will be supporting the event by bringing prominent soccer players to interact and coach mini soccer, as a commitment to our recent partnership in the “show me your number” campaign. To find out more about it please visit www.yournumber.co.za

20 May 2008

PRESS STATEMENT : Human Rights Organisations decry Xenophobia!!!

The AIDS Consortium echo the voice of Madiba in calling for an immediate cessation of all targeted attacks on vulnerable people. We strongly condemn the unjust and violent displays of mob persecution based on location, appearance, language or any other differences. We call on all South Africans to uphold and live into the principles of the freedom and dignity as outlined in the Constitution that so many gave their lives for.

We call on ordinary South Africans to honour the principles of equality and freedom we fought for, to accept neighbours in a spirit of freedom, security and dignity.

We urge stakeholder calm and call on government for decisive action to gain control of the situation; to ensure humane and prompt treatment for victims at all hospitals and to effectively address the plight of the poor and marginalised.

We express outrage on reports of hospital casualties turning people away without documentation, as well as attacks on churches and places of safety. We further call for media responsibility in publishing inhumane photos of burning people and injured children.

Donations of food and blankets can be made to the offices of the Red Cross or The AIDS Consortium.
