AIDS Consortium (AC) today was voted to represent the Community development
and Non Governmental (NGO) sector in the South African National AIDS
Council (SANAC). This election took place at the Community development
and NGO Sector meeting held at the Orion Hotel on March 5 & 6, 2007
in Johannesburg. Two representatives from the organization were nominated
into office, Denise Hunt (AC Executive Director) as one of the three
high level representatives on the Strategic level of SANAC, as well
as Rhulani Lehloka (AC Communication and Resources Manager) as the Gauteng
Province representative.
The
objectives of this sector meeting were:
- To receive a developmental report on the process of developing the
National Strategic Plan (NSP) for 2007-2011 and provide input in key
areas of the NSP.
- To review NGO sector report of the past two years, and
- To elect the new sector representatives to SANAC for the next two
years.

accurate database. This representation was part of the criteria used
to nominate the organizations onto this body. As a human rights organization,
AC is aimed at promoting a non-discriminatory response to the HIV/AIDS
epidemic based on human rights as enshrined in South Africa’s
constitution. By filtering essential skills and providing resources
to affiliates and the general public, the AC is fulfilling part of its
vision, which is to facilitate and grow an established network of AIDS
Service Organisations (ASOs) to effectively address the needs of all
people infected and affected by HIV and AIDS thereby ensuring human
dignity for all.
